Financial Assistance

Thanks to public support of The War Amps Key Tag and Address Label Service, the CHAMP Program is able to provide financial assistance to child amputees and their families. CHAMP provides financial assistance for:

Artificial Limbs

Artificial ArmThe CHAMP Program fosters a positive attitude towards the wearing of artificial limbs. The cost for an artificial limb ranges from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands depending on what is required. This is a heavy financial burden for most families, especially considering that child amputees outgrow their artificial limbs faster than their clothing.

With this in mind, the CHAMP Program provides financial assistance to cover the cost of artificial limbs, where provincial medical plans or private insurance plans do not cover the entire cost.

Recreational Limbs

recreational limbAs part of the Winner's Circle philosophy, Champs fully participate in activities with their family and peers. Some Champs love to play sports while others enjoy activities such as playing a musical instrument. CHAMP covers 100 per cent of the cost of recreational limbs and devices for its members. Recreational limbs for musical instruments, swimmingskiing, or other activities are considered to be a necessity for child amputees.

Being in the Winner's Circle means having a winning attitude that will carry Champs through life, as they face challenges and overcome them.

The War Amps is not involved in competitive sports. The War Amps is not partnered with, nor does it participate in, activities of disabled sports organizations. The War Amps programs emphasize that for all child amputees, having fun and spending time with friends and family are the most important objectives!

Travel to Prosthetic Centres

prosthetistCanada is fortunate to have prosthetic and rehabilitation centres from coast-to-coast to serve amputees. However, many child amputees and their families do not live near one of these centres. Travel to and from prosthetic centres can be very expensive. An appointment to fit an artificial limb can take several days. Therefore, the CHAMP Program covers travel costs to and from prosthetic centres for its members.

The War Amps CHAMP Program is not itself a prosthetic or rehabilitation centre. For a list of such centres, please contact The National Amputee Centre.
