Grandpa's War in Bomber Command
Format: Paperback ($15.00) • Order Book

Born and raised in Toronto, Jack W. Singer joined the RCAF at age 19 and trained in Canada under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan as a bomb-aimer. Leaving his family and fiancée behind, he continued his training in England and was assigned to No. 9 Squadron, RAF on June 29, 1944.

Grandpa's War in Bomber Command is a personal account of his experiences serving in one of the most dangerous occupations of the war—Bomber Command.

From his very first sortie until the end of his tour, he and his crewmates faced unimaginable terrors and near misses as they flew in their four-engine Lancaster bomber through heavy enemy flak night after night.  He describes the special kinship that developed among his seven-man crew and how these young volunteers coped under such extraordinary circumstances. With candour, insight and a healthy dose of humour, he describes the grim realities of their job and the life lessons he learned along the way.

Singer wrote this memoir for his grandchildren in 1998. Now, following his wish, it is being made available to a wider audience to help people understand how it really was in World War II.

"For me and my fellow crew members, we always felt that Bomber Command was really contributing in a big way to the shortening of the war and to saving the lives of Allied ground forces. We did what we had to do to bring the war to a successful conclusion. We had to fight back and I do not regret having done my duty."
