Music played an important role in the lives of Canadian soldiers. It also plays an integral part of The War Amps military heritage documentaries. Accompanied by archival war footage and period photographs, several well-known Canadian musicians have used their talents to create beautiful and touching songs to accompany the NEVER AGAIN! series.
The songs recall the sadness of families separated during wartime, as well as the courage and heroism of the Canadian troops who volunteered to go off to war.
These music videos, as well as many other valuable resources have been packaged within this special resource kit for teachers, students, parents and other educational institutions to assist in commemorating Canada’s military history.

- Music Videos
Legacy is a ballad performed by internationally-renowned Canadian tenor John McDermott, a long time supporter of The War Amps. The lyrics tell of the debt we owe to those who gave their lives for our freedom.
NEVER AGAIN! was written and produced especially for The War Amps Military Heritage Series by Robin Moir and Joseph Turner, two Canadian musicians who have an outstanding reputation in the music field. The song’s haunting lyrics and beautiful melody have earned it several international awards. (Music sheets also available)
The D-Day Dodgers was produced for The War Amps documentary A War of Their Own. After the D-Day invasion of France, the Allies fighting in Italy became known as the D-Day Dodgers. The nickname implied that they were avoiding the “real” war in France. The troops put out a sarcastic response to the catchy tune of the popular wartime song Lili Marlène.
The late Barry Campbell wrote A Place They Call Dieppe and The Ballad of Jimmy Kerr. A Place They Call Dieppe recalls the courage and heroism of the Canadian troops who stormed the beaches at Dieppe.The Ballad of Jimmy Kerr is a tribute to all those who volunteered to go off to war.
Canadian singer/songwriter Wendy West donated her songs, While You’re Away, Tomorrow, and I’ll be Waiting for You. Sung in the Vera Lynn style, they recall the sadness of families separated during the war.
Are You Really There? is a love song which expresses the sentiments of servicemen longing for home. George Blackburn, a Normandy veteran and best-selling author, wrote the song about his wife while overseas.

- The War Amps – Operation Legacy Remembrance Service
These seven and two-minute videos consist of a special wreath-laying ceremony which took place at the Canadian National Military Cemetery.
- In Flanders Fields by John McCrae
In conjunction with a special Remembrance Day ceremony, Cliff Chadderton does a rendition of In Flanders Fields that is featured on the Military Heritage DVD. A copy of the poem is also provided.
