Stephen Spielberg's fascinating movie Saving Private Ryan, released in July 1998, focused public attention on D-Day – the greatest Allied battle of the Second World War. This time around, it tells of the heroism of the ordinary soldier.

They have the resources of Hollywood and the distribution throughout Canada, but American films tend to deflect the equally fascinating achievements of Canadians.

This is particularly true of the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. Canada was allotted one of the toughest objectives – literally right in the middle of the British sector. As we might expect, these new and realistic portrayals of our great Allies will fail to point out a significant factor – the Canadians got further inland on D-Day than any of the other Forces involved in the taking of this historic Normandy bridgehead.

D-Day: The Story of the Canadian Assault Troops is produced and narrated by War Amps CEO Cliff Chadderton, who fought in Normandy with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles.

Canadians must have an opportunity to place in perspective what our famous Infantry and Armoured Battalions did, to counterbalance what we saw in the 1998 spate of films about the U.S. troops. Documentaries by and for Canadians are a "must."

Moreover, our documentary on D-Day is a true story. Fictionalized versions can be accurate up to a point. D-Day: The Story of the Canadian Assault Troops is based on the war diaries of the regiments who did the job.
