The Eastern Front and The Western Front Video Jacket Cover

The Eastern Front focuses on the suffering and hardship that took place in the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia during the Second World War.

Through the use of exclusive film footage taken during the battles of Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad, and Kursk, this documentary reveals a view of the war that is unfamiliar to many Canadians.

A young member of The War Amps CHAMP Program for child amputees joins Cliff Chadderton to learn about the events of that struggle. Together, they view scenes of destruction. Whole villages were burned to the ground. Thousands of innocent people died from starvation and bomb attacks. Soldiers were burned alive in tank battles. The CHAMP youngster has an opportunity to hear a Soviet woman's experiences as a child during the war.

The Western Front - The setting is an old movie theatre where, during the early 1940s, Canadians watched glorified news accounts from the battlefront.

Cliff Chadderton invites a young member of The War Amps CHAMP Program for child amputees to the movie house to learn the true story about the Second World War. One million Canadians participated and 45,000 never came home.

The newsreels are contrasted with authentic footage from the battles of Dieppe, Sicily and Normandy. These scenes depict the misery and horror experienced by the young soldiers as they fought on foreign soil, far from home. They died in trenches, at sea and in each other's arms.

The Eastern Front and The Western Front are reminders to the younger generation that war is not as glamorous or heroic as it is portrayed in the movies.
