The Ferrier Coupler

Photo of the Ferrier Coupler DeviceThe Ferrier Coupler is a quick disconnect device that allows amputees to completely disconnect any component below the socket in seconds. This enables amputees to remove or change components on their limbs easily.

Applications:

  • An above-knee amputee who downhill skiis on one leg with outriggers would need to remove all outer clothing to remove or put on his/her artificial leg before and after skiing. With the Ferrier Coupler, the amputee can wear the artificial limb to the ski hill, pull up the ski pants leg to remove the lower part of the leg, keeping the socket on as a stump protector and for additional warmth. When finished skiing, the amputee just rolls up the pant leg again to re-attach the lower part of the artificial leg.
  • Being able to remove the portion of the leg below the socket, the amputee can sit comfortably over a prolonged period of time in confining seats such as in vehicles, on airplanes, or even on an office chair.
  • Ferrier Coupler allows for temporary components to be worn while the artificial limb is in for repairs.
  • Special components are also available such as the Trowbridge Terra-Round Foot which is water resistant and has a traction base pad making it suitable for use in the shower.
  • One young bilateral amputee has Ferrier Couplers in his standard artificial legs so that he can remove his artificial feet to put on his adapted roller blades.
