Flying planes is an exciting experience, and amputees can obtain their private and commercial pilot licences. Some arm amputees have found their standard artificial limb, like a myoelectric, works well enough to operate the cockpit controls. Another option for partial hand amputees is to use a simple gripping device (featured here). This device was made to grasp the control stick and allow the amputee to pull back hard in an emergency landing simulation during pilot training. It consists of a hook covered with a rubber latex sleeve to prevent it from slipping off the gears. When using this device and the remaining thumb, the amputee has sufficient grasping capability to pull the gear shift toward himself and manipulate the plane with confidence.
