Chadderton Feels Disclaimer Unhelpful
OTTAWA, ON, January 26, 1993
STATEMENT:
"There is no convincing evidence that a disclaimer on a film would be noticed by a viewer, but it certainly would permit further distribution, which could be dangerous."
This statement was made today by Cliff Chadderton, Chief Executive Officer of The War Amps, in response to a recommendation from the Senate Sub-Committee which studied the controversial CBC series, "The Valour and the Horror".
"A more effective solution would be the new release of an edited version of the series, taking into account the objections raised by the CBC Ombudsman," Chadderton stated. "This would be in accordance with the public promise made by Gerard Veilleux, President of the CBC, in a news release of November 10th last," he added.
Chadderton suggested that the Sub-Committee's request for a disclaimer, and that another film be made reflecting the views of veterans, would still leave the undesirable situation where the original product would be available for future generations. He stated further that he feels a much better solution to the problem would be an emended version which eliminates the historical inaccuracies.
