Winterlude 2009 - Ice Sculpture In February 2009, Operation Legacy attended a ceremony at the Winterlude Festival in Ottawa to unveil an ice sculpture to mark the 60th Anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Representing Operation Legacy was President Karen Valley, Vice President Annelise Petlock, CHAMP Graduate James Jordan. Ottawa Branch President, Charles Jefferson, and his daughter, Kathleen, also attended. The ceremony was hosted by the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs. The ice sculpture featured NATO’s emblem - a compass, encircled by a Sabre jet, the St. Laurent cross destroyer, the M113A3 personnel carrier and three peacekeepers that signify Canada’s important military contributions to the alliance.

Winterlude 2008 - Menin Gate As part of the commemorations marking the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War, Ottawa’s Winterlude sculpted and unveiled a 34 tonne ice replica of the Menin Gate Memorial. During the nightly last post ceremonies, the 6,940 names of the Canadian soldiers who fell near Ypres and have no known grave were projected in the arch of the ice memorial. CHAMP Graduates Annélise and Karen represented Operation Legacy and stood alongside War Amps Ottawa Branch member Charlie Jefferson for the unveiling.

Winterlude 2007 - Vimy Marking the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, Ottawa’s Winterlude 2007 sculpted and unveiled an ice replica of the Vimy Memorial. CHAMP Graduates Annélise and Karen attended the event as representatives of Operation Legacy.

Tomb of The Unknown Soldier Members of Operation Legacy were honoured to participate in The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier ceremony. The Tomb was constructed at the base of the National War Memorial in Ottawa and holds the remains of a Canadian soldier killed during the First World War. His body represents the 27,000 plus unidentified Canadians killed in war.

Committee Representation Members help to preserve Canada's military heritage by actively sitting on a number of Veterans Affairs Canada committees, such as Vimy Memorial Restoration, Cenotaphs and Monuments Restoration Program, Veterans' Week, Senate and House Committees, the CRTC, working groups and many others.

Members of Operation Legacy represented The War Amps at the opening receptions of the Mary Riter Hamilton Exhibitions several times recently, such as: the 1998 Exhibition at the Archives on the Market in Ottawa; Thunder Bay, Ontario in Thunder Bay in 2001; Red Deer, Alberta in Red Deer in 2004; and the unveiling of a plaque in her birthplace, Teeswater, Ontario, to honour her contributions to Canada’s military heritage.

From September 18, 2001 to October 15, 2001, Karen Valley, President of Operation Legacy, represented The War Amps as a special guest attending John McDermott’s Canadian Remembrance Tour, hosting displays and providing information during the shows.

Canadian War Museum Members were on the advisory committee to ensure that our new Canadian War Museum tells the story of Canada’s wartime heritage accurately and appropriately. Representatives were invited to take part in the official opening ceremonies.
