CHAMP Seminars

CHAMP SeminarsThe War Amps holds regional CHAMP Seminars every year, bringing together child amputees and their parents. Seminars are a powerful experience - many youngsters and parents meet other amputees and their parents for the first time, while others renew friendships with Champ families they met at previous seminars.

The seminar program is one of the most important programs administered under CHAMP. The friendly informal atmosphere surrounding CHAMP Seminars is an ideal environment for developing the winner’s spirit even in the youngest children.

At seminars, child amputees (Champs) and their parents experience a wide range of interactive sessions.

  • During the Champ Counselling Session, for example, younger Champs discuss things like answering questions, staring, and teasing. Junior Counsellors offer practical advice and personal insight into these issues.

  • Parents have many questions as their children go through various stages. There are sessions devoted to helping parents cope with the unique situations their child must face, while other sessions address the concerns of teens.

  • Sessions on artificial limbs and special recreational limbs and devices provide Champs and their parents with up-to-date information. During these sessions Champs are invited to demonstrate their own artificial limbs and devices that they use for different recreational activities such as hockey, swimming, or playing the violin. They are proud of their limbs!

Super Champs, those with multiple amputations, have their own seminar. These Multiple Amputation Seminars address their special needs and requirements, such as: independence, education, computers and strategies to gain future employment as adults.

CHAMP Seminar weekends are a great opportunity for Champs and parents to peruse valuable informational resources.

The benefits of CHAMP Seminars are evident. Apart from the practical side, the children and parents receive personal encouragement and form lasting friendships.

We found the sessions interesting and very appropriate for many of the things that
